Need some ADVICE please

Am looking for advice. An organisation forwarded me contracts that are written in a rarely-used dialect of FRENCH-GERMAN (I grasp max. 30% of the wording but am still confused because my techno-speak is more rusty than my street-talk in both languages).

They reassure me it's not important to understand the documents but remind me they're legally-binding. Am merely instructed to sign where indicated by 'x'. They've made no effort to help me understand (..and to be honest am afraid I'll show my stoopidity by asking awkward questions).

If I don't turn up at the office next Thurs it will be understood that I'm automatically passing power-of-attorney to strangers who will sign the contracts in my name.

The thing is I don't get kicked-out of the group even if I do reject them - in fact it's a bit of a head-wreck, for some reason I get less privileges if I sign-them!

What do I do?
- sign on dotted line? ..apparently it's good for my wallet, sounds good
- reject this time? ..insist they translate into something I can sign
- hide at home? give power-of-attorney so someone can decide for me?

(I forgot to say that if I sign they'll make decisions without need to consult me in future. That'd be a relief, I hate responsibility - my Mom still tells me what to wear to school ..sorry meant to say work.)


If I added that it was a REFERENDUM would that change anything?

WHAT IN THE WORLD? kicks-off tonight on RTE

Building on the success of the first and second series of What in the World? This third series will visit remote parts of the world to raise greater public awareness of global development and human rights issues.

TUVALU a cluster of nine tiny coral islands and one of the smallest nations on earth is in danger of disappearing because of global warming. Remote PATAGONIA is fast becoming a playground for billionaires while the people of BURMA are suffering from civil war for nearly three decades. The inhabitants of DIEGO GARCIA were forcibly evacuated to make way for a UK/US air and navy support station. Oil, diamonds and silver attract multinationals to ANGOLA and BOLIVIA at the expense of the local people.

This documentary series will focus on the ordinary people in these countries as they experience the human consequences of global economic inequalities and human rights violations.

The series is edited by our very own RONAN O'MUIRGHEASA - SEXTON+ are proud to have had him resident at our South Georges Street Studio while working on the series.

Andrews Lane relaunched by CLAMPDOWN

PILAR recently finished work in the art department on yet another series of THE TUDORS mini-series starring JONATHAN RHYS-MEYERS, SAM NEIL, PETER O'TOOLE. Herself and CIARAN plan to wind-down (yeh right) with a 3 months trip kicking-off in NEW YORK and finishing in CUBA. So we sent them off with a whopper-of-a-night (SAT MAY 31) in the newly launched ALT - all thanks to ANYA!

It's been my mantra for some time but there's nothing like an 'economic-readjustment' to provide space for creativity to flourish - and a space that was once on the verge of being lost to 'retail-mecca mentality' has been re-branded and is just what the doctor ordered!

This wicked space is nicely disguised by the uninviting original exterior of what was ANDREW'S LANE THEATRE - SEXTON+ previously promoted productions at the theatre which was sold in February 2007 by owner & producer PAT MOYLAN (now of LANE PRODUCTIONS) because it couldn’t afford a 'modern-revamp' (that phrase gives me the chills).

Developers were snapping at the heels of what was marketed purely as a site in an ace location! Replacing the single-storey ex-theatre with a 6-storey office and retail mall - a phenomenally original concept - was the original wet-dream of developers. The building-boom was about to rob yet another space where creativity would flourish because artists - passionately-committed to stimulating audiences versus profit - can rarely out-bid a developer who's race to turn a quick-buck blinds him (yeh predominantly fellas) from the fluffy idea of contributing anything worthwhile to our culture.

The timing couldn't have been better. If Moylan had waited until property prices had stagnated she may have questioned putting it on the block ..if sold even a few months earlier the wrecking-ball would have done it's damage by the time the market slowed and the developer re-did his sums ...the opportunity would have been lost, Dublin would be poorer and I wouldn't be here promoting the re-invented space, it's an ill wind...

By opening night on MAY 3 CLAMPDOWN 'return of the warehouse party' also saw the return of substance. Knocking down a few walls easily transformed the once-weary space and, with very little architectural intervention, emphasised it's industrial, warehouse feel (it's got undertones of the disused ORMONDE PRINT-WORKS (developed as the MORRISON HOTEL by HUGH O'REGAN) but it tastes way-sweeter coz Dublin has been starved for too long).

Dublin street artist MASER, and crew, gave the place a lick to interrupt the low-key interior without going over-board. CLAMPDOWN sets out to create a 'minimal space with no fuss or pointless tacky interior design, great sound systems, underground music and art colliding ...music policy is forward thinking but anything goes with an emphasis on quality recordings from the last 2 decades of disco, punk, funk, house, techno, electro and hip hop alongside future classics and current gems ...featuring the most interesting DJs gracing the decks from our thriving domestic electronic scene ..different AV artists and visuals will show their stuff each week' - sound fresh?

And if you're someone who doesn't like to hit the after-parties too early you're in for a treat - the venue rocks later than any other in Dublin city - last night it kicked beyond 03:30 which meant the spanish djs on our roof-garden were nicely warmed-up by the time we swung by to catch an amazing sunrise (...and fair play to the crew of gardai that arrived around 6am and clearly agreed there was no good reason to pull the plug.)

To qualify organisations should be working within the fields of Child Welfare, Homelessness or Disability. Schools are considered within the Child Welfare category for the purposes of this giveaway.

The Turkey flopped!

Sad to say that poor old DUSTIN didn't do so well in Europe. Apparently he got no points but he can take consolation from the fact that the days when amazing performances won EUROVISION are over (..of course am thinking JOHNNY LOGAN, LINDA MARTIN (the previous turkey's who represented Ireland)).

Fair play to Dustin, he showed Europe that mostly the Irish don't take the thing seriously. Mostly except Johnny Logan that is (Jesus he has a bebo page!!!) who didn't see the joke at all.

Funny, I though he had a sense of humour when he signed up to do those freaky Eurosaver Ads for the hamburger company (I don't want to give a link here because I'd be advertising them by default).

Dustin the Turkey performs for Ireland in semi-finals tomorrow night

DUSTIN THE TURKEY has drifted a bit in the EUROVISION SONG CONTEST betting stakes. PADDY POWER are giving odds of 8/1 for an outright win - Dustin has now slipped to fifth-joint favourite.  The semi-finals will be broadcast live tomorrow night from BELGRADE, SERBIA.

Apparently european success has gone to the head of this usually level-headed jack-of-all-trades-builder/turkey who upped his dressing-room demands: he now demands a box of LYONS TEA, the FAIR CITY complete box-set and podcasts of JOE DUFFY's radio programme LIVELINE.

SECRET GARDEN at the Iveagh Gardens, Dublin

The SOLOMON GALLERY have launched their biennial sculpture outdoors exhibtion. The show is held in the IVEAGH GARDENS off HARCOURT ST in Dublin.

The exhibition features some impressive large scale works, and the gardens are a great setting. Take the SANDYFORD - ST. STEPHEN'S GREEN Luas and get off at Harcourt St.

You'll find everyone from ROWAN GILLISPIE, PATRICK SCOTT, PATRICK O'REILLY, JOHN BEHAN RHA, IMOGEN STUART ..the list is exhaustive representation of prominent artists working in variety of media. Previously the show was held in Rowan's amazing gardens in Blackrock. Pic featured here is piece by international glass artist DALE CHIHULY ('Ocean Depths Persian Set with Red Lip Wraps', $45,000).

Don't miss it - it couldn't be more convenient for a lunchtime visit.

new video work by Peter O'Kennedy

TRACKING BEACON (NY 12508) is a new video installation by PETER O'KENNEDY. I went along to the launch yesterday evening with Kateann, Súlán and Gustavo.

I won't describe the piece in detail because you should discover it for yourself - go and see it!. All I'll say is that it distorts perspectives and stimulates a mix of emotions. The beauty of the piece is that it doesn't rely on digital tricks. Open your mind and the sucks you in - I found myself setting mental destinations and then not wanting to disembark when I'd arrived. The venue was a stroke of genius too - the unfamilar surroundings of the time-trapped venue really added to the experience.

It was an ideal evening for the bbq launch in the courtyard - I bumped into lighting and furniture designer LEO SCARFF who was telling me he's just about to install a huge piece in MARKS & SPENCER on GRAFTON ST. Check-out his website www.leoscarffdesign.com
(He recommended WILLIE DOHERTY's work at the FARMLEIGH ESTATE GALLERY (I know Willie is showing in the DOUGLAS HYDE GALLERY in TRINTY COLLEGE at the monent as well so they're worth checking out.)

Peter O'Kennedy was born in Dublin in 1964. He attended the SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS in NEW YORK before returning to Ireland and the NATIONAL COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN moving-on to play drums with THE GOLDEN HORDE - he was also a core member of NINE WASSIES FROM BAINNE. An accomplished sculptor, O'Kennedy has had two solo show in PROJECT ARTS CENTRE and has exhibited around Ireland, New York, Argentina and France. He held an artist in residency at the IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART throughout the latter half of 1998 and has worked on a number of interior design projects including GUBU and the ODESSA CLUB.

are you brave enough to BARE ALL?

Internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Spencer Tunick will be offering the public the chance of a lifetime to become part of his first back to back city art project in both Cork and Dublin this June.

Multiple groups of nude participants will be photographed outdoors by Tunick as part of his series of installations that have previously taken place in cities around the world including New York, Amsterdam and Mexico City.

“Tunick is an imaginative and inspirational artist who as part of his art practice creates extraordinary images of the collective body. We look forward to working with him and the public to create an unforgettable collective civic moment in Dublin’s Docklands.

This arts project is part of a series of invitations to artists to create new works in the Docklands and include artists Antony Gormley, Willie Doherty, Idris Kahn, Bethan Huws, Graham Hudson and writer, Ian Sinclair.”

HABITAT closes flagship Dublin store rented from CLARENDON PROPERTIES

HABITAT has closed its Dublin and Galway stores because of a "severe" deterioration in sales. The company is the first major retail casualty of the economic downturn.

The business closed at 5pm yesterday "Due to a severe downturn in sales in our Galway and Dublin stores, it has become impossible to trade through the subsequent financial difficulties, particularly in light of the current economic environment," the company said.

Habitat Ireland is operated by CONAI DESIGNS - the company owned by MALCOLM BRIGHTON'S which purchased the franchise in 2002 from the foundation looking after business interests of Ikea-founder INGVAR KAMPRAD and his family (Habitat was originally set-up by SIR TERENCE CONRAN).

The Dublin store underwent a €2.5 million refurbishment in 2005 when Habitat moved from it's original home on St. Stephen's Green - it was rented from CLARENDON PROPERTIES for €1.3 million.

Developers PADDY McKILLEN, and TONY LEONARD are behind Clarendon who paid €22 million for the former BANK of IRELAND branch. Clarendon used a company called WHITE GLORY to develop the site which stretches from College Green back to Suffolk Street.

McKillen is one of the biggest property owners in the Grafton Street area. In 1997, together with Solicitor IVOR FITZPATRICK, he bought McGONAGLE'S nightclub on South Anne Street, off Grafton Street.

Clarendon bought a number of its properties, including the POWERSCOURT TOWNHOUSE CENTRE in Dublin and the SAVOY SHOPPING CENTRE in Cork, in 1996 following the collapse of POWER CORPORATION.

McKillen owns part of the Irish franchises for WAGAMAMA, TOWER RECORDS and Japanese lifestyle retailer MUJI. He also has stakes in CHAMPION SPORTS, MARATHON SPORTS, CAPTAIN AMERICA'S on Grafton Street and the moped shop, SKOOTER. He is also said to be involved in the KERLIN GALLERY in Dublin and owns 50% of the JERVIS SHOPPING CENTRE. He bought that site in 1995 for under €6 million - it is now thought to be worth over €225 million.
